Grading Info:
The junior syllabus runs parrallel to the
senior syllabus but strikes and target areas are geared towards the age
and maturity of the juniors and are practiced in a controlled safe
environment under the guidance of qualified instructor's.
Gradings test student's in the following categories:
1) Techniques
A set series of moves done with a partner/s, simulating a particular
combat scenario, in which one partner is the attacker and the other the
defender. The attacker uses a preset technique (or techniques) against
their partner, and the defender must use a separate set of
pre-determined techniques to evade, block, and counter attack.
A
strong emphasis is placed on each student during each grade focusing on
their application of the techniques to each attack and the ability to
integrate these techniques into a freestyle sparring situation. To
understand and be able to break down a technique no matter what grade
you are going for leads to an increase in a students overall
ability to defend themselves through a sense of greater awareness of a
techniques application in all situations. The ability to adapt to all
situations in an attack better equips an individual when and if the
unexpected happens.
2) Forms
This section is comparable to "Kata" in Japanese martial arts, and
''Patterns'' in Korean styles. A form is a choreographed series of
predetermined techniques that must be performed in a precise order.
3) Sparring
Sparring or "Kumite" is a type of freestyle fighting. It is designed
as a way for participants to practice what they have learned from
techniques and forms, and apply that knowledge in a more realistic and
dynamic manner against an opponent (or multiple opponents). Students
are expected and encouraged to integrate techniques into their own
individual freestyle fighting The focus on freestyle fighting
is to adopt, improvise and apply multiple block / strike
combinations in a realistic but controlled safe environment for
the student.
